Suicide Awareness & Risk Assessment is a one day workshop that covers all aspects of suicide awareness and risk assessment.  Attendees will learn how to ‘recognise’ suicide risk, ‘respond’ to risk  appropriately, and then gain a working knowledge of the most suitable ‘referral’ pathways available to assist those who may be at risk of suicide. Also involves practically applying suicide intervention skills.  Content includes:

identify and assess suicide risk;
defuse crisis situations;
support people at risk of suicide;
psychology of suicide and self-harm;
warning signs;
responding to threat;
referral; and

Target Audience

The session is suitable for provisional psychologists and students studying psychology or health. The workshop offers a holistic approach to suicide prevention training including a half-day dedicated to practical intervention skills.

Please note:

APS Members can accrue Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours by participating in CPD activities that they determine to be relevant to their individual professional skills, learning plans and goals. These may be self-initiated. CPD activities do not need to be endorsed by the APS.

About the Presenter

Shaun Walsh has worked for the past 19 years as both a counsellor and trainer in Australia. He spent 7 years at Lifeline Melbourne in various roles from Counselling Supervisor, to trainer, and also spent extensive periods of time as Acting Manager for this organisation.  His main area of expertise and experience is in mental health and suicide intervention. Having spent 6 years as a counsellor on Suicide Line Victoria and the Suicide Call Back Service he has worked with and trained literally thousands of people, not only with those who are struggling to manage their own suicidal thoughts, but also with those who are concerned about someone else that may be at risk of suicide, and with those who are bereaved by suicide.

Shaun spent over 2 years as Training Manager at Crisis Support Services, and is now focusing on sharing his knowledge of suicide risk assessment and intervention with others. Shaun creates a safe learning environment in his workshops that enables all participants to feel comfortable in openly talking about and discussing what is a sensitive and emotive topic.
