Stillness is the optimum state of natural human equilibrium and complete mental rest. Stillness Meditation Therapy™ (SMT) is far more than participation in a meditation class. SMT is a sophisticated, medically based meditative experience, arrived at with the assistance of expert SMT therapists. SMT continues the exceptional work of renowned Australian psychiatrist, Ainslie Meares MD.  From his medical knowledge, insight and originality, Meares’ understanding of the mind tapped intothis extraordinary mental resource. Contrary to the focused attention of mindfulness practices, when correctly facilitated, SMT takes the practitioner, simply and naturally, to improved mental health.

Anxiety accompanies all forms of stress, and all forms of illness. Therefore, mental health essentially means the relief and management of such influences. SMT specifically addresses anxiety relief and stress management. In SMT, the subject is assisted in experiencing his or her innate ability to be globally still – an experience without the influence of ego. With repetition of this intensive experience, anxiety levels reduce naturally as the individual begins to adapt to living with less tension, less strain, increased psychic equilibrium and improved general wellbeing. Results can be astonishing – added to which, people incidentally discover mindfulness and serene heightened awareness, without trying. As such, SMT is much more than mindfulness.

This 3-hour PD program will introduce health professionals to the foundation of SMT, the experience of SMT and an overview of how SMT is facilitated. Attendees at this presentation may also be eligible to commence the SMT teacher-training course conducted by Pauline McKinnon.

Topics include:

  • How SMT offers a direct route to optimal mind and body rest
  • Reduction of anxiety through SMT – Removing obstacles and ‘walls’ which in turn makes other forms of psychotherapy more effective
  • Facilitation of SMT – Mutual trust, dedication, empathy and the desire to make a difference.
  • How SMT is accessible to everyone, with ease
  • How SMT is both simple and complex
  • Discussion around how individuals in need of improved mental health can be observed to react in ways as to keep them locked into symptomatic mental illness – and often accompanied by physical symptoms

About the Presenter

Pauline McKinnon is internationally known for her pioneering book In Stillness Conquer Fear, first published in 1983.  All those years ago Pauline’s story brought anxiety to public awareness as a significant social problem and the book, now in 30th anniversary edition, continues to offer hope and support today.

Pauline is a psychotherapist and the Founding Director of the Stillness Meditation Therapy Centre in Melbourne where she and her associates specialise in the pioneering work of the renowned psychiatrist, Dr Ainslie Meares. Since 1990, Pauline’s further books, recordings and presentations have contributed widely to the practice of meditation generally and led to meditation teaching in schools.

Pauline conducts a SMT Teacher Training Course, has assisted in the development of a meditation module with Australian Catholic University, and initiated the formation of MA (The Meditation Association of Australia). In recent years, meditation in many forms has rapidly gained popularity as an effective life-skill.  Pauline considers Meares’ unique natural ‘stillness’ approach to be more advanced in its therapeutic value than meditation per se and a fundamental intervention for anxiety reduction, stress management and wellness across the life span.
