Depression
is one of the major mental health problems affecting all communities with 8 to
12% of people suffering depression in their lifetime. In this presentation Dr
O’Kelly will discuss the underlying factors that contribute to a person
suffering from depression while outlining the different forms that depression
might take. The symptoms of depression will be described so that they can be
identified.
Dr
O’Kelly will then explain the most effective interventions for their treatment.
As suicidal ideation and behaviour can be a part of depression this will also
discussed and explored. The red flag warning signs will be addressed and ideas
will be given as to how to handle these situations.
About the Presenter
Dr Monica O'Kelly is a Clinical Psychologist and
Director of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Australia. She is Director of the
Australian Institute for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and an adjunct
senior lecturer in the School of Psychology and Psychiatry at Monash
University. Monica has trained in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy at the
Albert Ellis Institute in New York and is an Associate Fellow of the Institute.
She has also completed the Extramural Training Program
at the Beck Institute in Philadelphia and is a fellow of the Academy of
Cognitive Therapy. Monica has published many articles in the area of Cognitive
Behaviour Therapy. After leaving university, Monica worked as a psychologist
with children, adolescents and adults in a variety of government and
educational settings before going into private practice. In the thirty years
Monica has been working as a psychologist, she has worked with clients
suffering a range of problems.
