Stillness Meditation Therapy: The original therapeutic meditation for anxiety and stress relief – naturally
Stillness Meditation Therapy (SMT™) is a powerfully effective style of meditation, created for the purpose of relieving physical and emotional pain.  SMT is physiologically based and originated in Melbourne by the eminent psychiatrist Dr Ainslie Meares (1910-1986).  Dr Meares was internationally recognized for his work and well known for his many publications, especially Relief Without Drugs, (1967).

Meares dedicated his life’s work to helping people to help themselves!  His style of meditation provides mental rest which in turn assists the function of the homeostatic mechanism within the central nervous system.  SMT is significantly different from other forms of meditation.  It is not related to culture, philosophy or religion and its primary purpose is the outcome of a naturally lowered anxiety level and the relief of distressing symptoms.

At this workshop Pauline will offer a glimpse of her many years’ work with stressed and anxious clients.  Topics to be covered include:

•    walking the talk – my personal story
•    anxiety, stress, tension – chicken or the egg?
•    care of the mind – the theory of SMT
•    SMT – the meditation of difference
•    practical aspects of SMT
•    challenges of letting and learning
•    case studies and surprising outcomes

There will also be the opportunity to experience Stillness Meditation Therapy and time will be allowed for general discussion and Q & A.

Target Audience

Practitioners, teachers, social workers, nurses and other health professionals.

About the Presenter

Pauline McKinnon is an author, psychotherapist, and leader in the field of meditation teaching.  She has over 30 years’ personal and professional experience in the natural treatment of anxiety and was acknowledged by Dr Ainslie Meares as an exponent of his innovative work.   Pauline pioneered today’s public awareness of anxiety disorders after publishing her own story of recovery, In Stillness Conquer Fear, 1983.  In 1990 Pauline also led the way in the use of meditation with children and in schools.  Her more recent book, (Living Calm in a Busy World) is a contemporary commentary on Dr Meares’ work, spelling out the depth and breadth of the benefits gained from practicing SMT.  Pauline was instrumental in the establishment of the Australian Teachers of Meditation Association and is its immediate past president.  She is a Clinical Member of AAFT (Australian Association of Family Therapists) and a supporter of ADAVIC.
