Outline of Treatment approach
For the past 25 years, Dr. Curtis was a Registered Nurse with Psychiatric specialisation. She specialises in anxiety and comorbid depressive disorders - especially Panic, Generalised Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and comorbid drug and alcohol problems. Over the years working in the mental, health, psychiatric, and medical settings, Dr. Curtis has an extensive network of mental health and medical professions. This network provides an invaluable liaison and referral source ensuring the best outcome for her valued clients.
Dr. Curtis is knowledgeable of the problems that living in a fast paced global society can have on a person’s psychological wellbeing. The underlying message of the practice is that, in addition to those individuals with a recognised psychological disorder, psychological services are also appropriate for normal people dealing with normal problems of modern life. Treatment is, however, not open-ended and, in most cases, much can be achieved in a relatively short period of time with regular hourly consultations.
My vision for you is to become your own therapist! I do not give advice. Rather, I help you to explore alternatives so that you can make the best possible decisions for yourself. Important thing to remember about psychological therapy is that it can be hard work to change feelings, thoughts & behaviour-you have to be ready to commit yourself to attend regular sessions and follow through on your goals. One thing that cannot be changed is the past but you can change how you perceive the present.
The first appointment is arranged over the phone, with subsequent appointments decided on at the end of each session. The next few sessions focus mainly on assessment with time spent exploring what brings you to counselling, what your goals are, & how Dr. Curtis can best work with you to meet these goals. Subsequent sessions focus on working towards achieving these goals using a range of therapies. At regular intervals, you & Dr. Curtis review things to ensure therapy achieves the best outcome.
Treatment Interventions:
As both a Clinical and Counselling Psychologist Dr Curtis offers:

3 Relaxation strategies - progressive muscle relaxation; controlled breathing, meditation
4 Skills training - problem solving skills and training; anger management; social skills training; communication training; stress management; parent management training

Medicare Rebates:
Dr. Curtis usually charges $206.00 for a one-hour psychological consultation, which is the recommended APS 2009-2010 fee. If eligible, you may receive up to 12 individual services in a calendar year (18 in exceptional circumstances). Your referring doctor (GP/Psychiatrist/Paediatrician) will assess your progress after the first six sessions. You need to pay the full amount of the consultation and use your detailed receipt to claim a Medicare rebate of $117.65. You cannot use your private health insurance ancillary cover to top up the Medicare rebates for these services. You need to decide if you will use Medicare or your private health insurance ancillary cover to pay for the psychological services you receive. You can either access rebates from Medicare following the claiming process or claim where available on your insurer’s ancillary benefits.
